About our foundation

An international NGO, born of a Tanzanian-Dutch cooperation, seeking to advance women’s prospects by focusing on their economic and social enablement, and by supporting the creation of joint, sustainable small enterprises.

Our vision

A developed society which is financially independent and respects human rights and justice for all.

Our mission

Supporting the economic, legal, and social enablement of women and therefore society as a whole, by supporting the creation of sustainable enterprises.

Our objectives

  • To enable underprivileged women to become financially independent.
  • To create awareness and understanding of human rights and other relevant legal topics among the women.
  • To support the women to share their knowledge and experience in building a business with their broader community.

Wanawake Tunaweza Tanzania is pursuing its vision through running a volunteer Women Enablement Program in the Arusha region in Northern Tanzania. Through an online and onsite 18 months’ coaching program, the volunteers provide women’s groups in the region with the knowledge and expertise to become financially independent. Additionally, the aim of the program is to provide the women capabilities and skills to stand on their own.

In Kiswahili, Wanawake Tunaweza translates to “Women, we can”. The programme initially began working with a women’s group named Wanawake Tunaweza, and the name resonated so well that the women graciously granted permission to use it for the entire programme.

In 2022, the programme was launched by two dedicated Tanzanian professionals with extensive experience in community development and social projects. They teamed up with a group of volunteers who had previously worked in Tanzania with underprivileged women, supporting them to enhance their socio-economic status.

How we work

The Wanawake Tunaweza program is specifically designed to support women’s groups, consisting primarily of underprivileged women, including single mothers and widows.

To maximise effectiveness and success, we aim to work with a maximum of 16 groups each year, which comprise between a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 15 women, and which will be coached/visited twice per month. This way, the programme will coach and enable between 128 and 240 women per 18 months.

In Tanzania, women often bear the financial responsibility not only for their immediate families but also for their extended families and communities. As a result, the program’s impact extends beyond the individual participants to benefit a broader community. It is estimated that the program indirectly impacts between 640 and 1,200 people.

Volunteers

Wanawake Tunaweza is working with volunteers from around the world. Volunteers, who, for the duration of the coaching program (18 months), mentor and guide the women’s groups helping them to build a joint business that also benefits the wider community the group is part of.

Wanawake Tunaweza is always looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteers, who are willing to dedicate a few hours each month to virtually meet with their group and guide them through the educational program. Together with the volunteer, the group will develop a small business, taking into account the group member’s strengths and weaknesses, and capabilities.

While affinity for or knowledge of accounting, savings & budgeting, business planning, and marketing are a plus, the drive to take a small group of women a step further is the single most important thing the program requires of a volunteer.

“The remarkable resilience of these women fuels their step-by-step progress in their group business, showcasing strength and dedication.”

“Your donation directly empowers women. Wanawake Tunaweza’s personal, small-scale approach ensures every contribution maximises impact for women’s benefit.”
