12 August 2025 marked a major milestone for Wanawake Tunaweza Tanzania (WTT) as we hosted our first-ever all-women’s event. Women from across our programme came together to celebrate everything they have achieved – and everything we’re building together.

Fittingly, the event was organised by one of our own women’s groups, Amani Group. What began as a small chair and table rental business has grown into a thriving events company. The group coordinated every aspect of the day, from the venue and decorations to the music and catering for almost 100 guests.

Alongside programme participants, the get-together welcomed representatives from other NGOs working in the region, as well as members of the Arusha District Council. Their presence reflected the growing reach of WTT across our local communities and the achievements of the many amazing women whom we support.

Our story begins

The all-women’s event also marked the official launch of Wanawake Tunaweza Tanzania following our registration and licensing in Tanzania.

But our story begins with a group of Dutch volunteers looking to build on their previous experience working with underprivileged women. Together with two committed Tanzanian professionals, they set out to create a programme that would help local women in Arusha improve their economic independence and long-term opportunities.

After a successful launch, today WTT is in full flow as a women’s empowerment programme across the Arusha region of northern Tanzania. Through an 18–24 month coaching programme delivered both online and in person, volunteers work alongside locally based women’s groups to build the knowledge, confidence and business skills needed to achieve financial independence.

Our goal is simple: to help women become self-sufficient and create sustainable futures for themselves and their families.

A strong start

We’ve started strong: in 2025, WTT supported eight women’s groups providing tailored coaching experiences to 85 women through more than 130 online sessions.

We’re driven by our vision of a society that is financially independent and grounded in human rights, equality and justice for all. We contribute to that vision by supporting the economic, legal and social empowerment of women, and guiding them in building sustainable enterprises that create lasting change.

As our impact grows, so does our ambition. In 2026, we welcomed three new groups into the programme: Twiga Women, Mshikamano and Langa Women. Meanwhile, several original members of our programme have taken flight after completing their coaching with us (we remain in close contact and regularly check in with them on their progress!).

The journey continues

Looking ahead, our aim is to double our reach and support 16 women’s groups, enabling us to work with approximately 160 women every 18 months.

The impact this growth will have is exciting. Every woman who gains the skills, confidence and resources to build her own future creates opportunities for many others around her. Equipped with practical skills in financial management and entrepreneurship, they go on to strengthen their families, support their neighbours and contribute to the prosperity of their wider communities.

That’s the change we’re working towards – one woman, one group and one community at a time!
